How to register a trademark in the UK

A UK trademark application is how you ask to protect a business name, product name, or logo for the goods and services you actually offer. Just Trademark It prepares that application. The UK Intellectual Property Office examines it and decides the outcome.

We are an independent service. We are not the UK IPO, not a government body, and not registered trade mark attorneys. We do not give legal advice, and nobody can guarantee that a trademark will be registered.

Trademark a business name or a logo

A word mark protects the name itself, however it is written. A logo mark protects the design as it looks. Most businesses start with the name. If you have a logo as well, tell us and our team will talk to you about it, because a name and a logo are usually separate applications.

You do not need to write the legal wording yourself. Describe what customers pay you for, in ordinary language, and we translate that into the specification.

A free UK trademark search looks for identical marks, marks that look or sound similar, and common spelling changes, in the areas that matter to your business. The result is a preliminary screening. It is not a clearance search by an attorney, and it is not a promise that the name is free to use.

What a UK trademark costs

There are two fees, and they are always shown separately. Our service fee covers the classification, the specification, the preliminary search, a human review, and tracking in your Trademark Wallet. The official fee is set by the UK IPO and is passed to them when an application is filed.

UK trademark application fees for one and two classes
1 class2 classes
Just Trademark It service£199£248
Official UK IPO fee£205£265
Total you pay£404£513

Each class after the first adds £49 to the service fee and £60 to the official fee. Official fees can change. VAT is not added. The official fee is not our revenue.

Trademark classes, in plain English

A UK trademark does not cover everything you might ever do. It covers the goods and services in the classes on the application. You do not have to learn the class numbers. Tell us what you sell or provide. We only include what you indicated. If something is unclear, we ask rather than guess.

What happens after you apply

  1. We receive the application and payment. Nothing has been filed yet.
  2. A person reviews the name, the owner, and the goods and services.
  3. Only after that review is an application filed with the UK IPO. You are told when that happens, and you receive the official application number.
  4. The UK IPO examines it. Other people can oppose a published application.
  5. If it is registered, it lasts 10 years and can be renewed. You can use ® only once it is registered. Until then, ™ is the honest mark to use.

Common questions

How much does a UK trademark cost?

For one class, the total is £404: £199 is the Just Trademark It service fee and £205 is the official UK IPO fee. A second class adds £49 to the service fee and £60 to the official fee, so two classes are £513. The official fee is paid to the UK IPO, not kept by us.

How do I trademark a business name in the UK?

Tell us the name and what the business actually sells or does. We turn that into goods, services and classes, you confirm it, and you pay. A person on our team reviews the application before anything is filed with the UK IPO. The IPO then examines it. Registration cannot be guaranteed.

Can I check if a trademark name is already taken?

You can run a free preliminary search for identical, similar-looking, similar-sounding and alternatively spelt marks. We will tell you what the search found. We will not tell you a name is available, and the search is not a guarantee.

Do I need to choose trademark classes myself?

No. Describe the business in your own words. We propose classes only from what you said you do or genuinely intend to do. You can see the class numbers if you want them, and you approve the list before review.
