UK Trademark Classes, Explained

Written by Just Trademark It. Not legal advice. We are not the UK IPO and not registered trade mark attorneys.

Trademark classes are the numbered groups the UK IPO uses for goods and services. There are 45 classes in the Nice Classification. Clothing sits in a different class from, for example, business consulting. A registration covers the list you file, not every class on the chart.

You do not have to pick the numbers

Describe the business the way you would explain it to a customer. We propose the goods, services and classes from what you wrote. We do not add products or services you did not indicate. If a sentence is unclear, we ask. You can open the class numbers if you want them, and you approve the list before a person reviews it.

Why an extra class costs more

Each extra class adds an official UK IPO fee and a service fee. That is set out in what a UK trademark costs. Listing a class you do not use, and do not genuinely intend to use, is not a shortcut to wider protection. The application should match the business.

Search the name, or start the application

You will see the service fee and the official UK IPO fee before you pay. Nothing is filed until a person has reviewed it.
