How to Trademark a Business Name in the UK
Written by Just Trademark It. Not legal advice. We are not the UK IPO and not registered trade mark attorneys.
A business-name trademark, often called a word mark, asks the UK Intellectual Property Office to protect the words themselves for the goods and services you list. The protection is for the name, not for one font or one logo.
What trademarking the name covers
If the name is registered, you can use it on those goods and services and challenge someone using the same or a confusingly similar mark there. It does not automatically ban the words in every trade. A similar name on very different goods may still be allowed. Other people can also oppose an application after it is published.
How to apply for the name
Tell us the name and what the business actually sells or does. We turn that into goods, services and classes, and we only include what you indicated. You confirm the list, then you pay. A person reviews the application before anything is filed with the UK IPO.
Search the name first with a free UK trademark search. The search is preliminary. We will tell you what it found. We will not tell you the name is available, and registration cannot be guaranteed.
If the brand is a product name rather than the company name, read trademark a product name. If customers know a logo more than the words, read how to trademark a logo.
Search the name, or start the application
You will see the service fee and the official UK IPO fee before you pay. Nothing is filed until a person has reviewed it.
