Who Should Own a UK Trademark

Written by Just Trademark It. Not legal advice. We are not the UK IPO and not registered trade mark attorneys.

The owner is the person or organisation that will legally own the trademark. That name and address are published on the UK register once an application is filed. Choosing the owner is part of the application, not a detail to fix casually later.

Limited company or you personally

If you trade through a limited company, it is usually the company that should own the trademark, in the name registered at Companies House. A sole trader usually applies in their own name. A partnership, charity, or overseas company is a different kind of owner.

This is general information, not legal advice. We are not registered trade mark attorneys. If you are unsure, choose the option that matches who runs the business and our team will check it during review. The form is in the application, after you have described what you do.

The owner is not always the same as the product brand. See trademark a product name.

Search the name, or start the application

You will see the service fee and the official UK IPO fee before you pay. Nothing is filed until a person has reviewed it.
